Understanding Kenyan Visas

Kenya offers several types of visas tailored to different travel needs. Before applying, determine the visa category that best suits your purpose:

  • Single Entry Visa – For tourism, business, or medical visits, valid for up to 90 days.
  • Transit Visa – Issued for travelers passing through Kenya, valid for up to 72 hours.
  • East Africa Tourist Visa – Allows travel between Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda for up to 90 days.
  • Multiple Entry Visa – Ideal for frequent travelers, valid for 3 to 12 months.
  • Work Permit & Student Visa – For long-term residence related to employment or education.

Required Documents

The documents required may vary based on nationality and visa type, but generally include:

  • Valid Passport – Must be valid for at least six months beyond the date of travel.
  • Completed Visa Application Form – All details must be accurate and up to date.
  • Passport-Sized Photos – Recent, taken against a plain background.
  • Proof of Accommodation – Hotel reservations or an invitation letter from a host.
  • Financial Proof – Bank statements or documents showing sufficient funds.
  • Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate – Mandatory for travelers from endemic regions.
  • Return or Onward Ticket – Demonstrates departure plans beyond Kenya.

Application Process

All Kenyan visa applications must be submitted online via the eCitizen portal. Follow these steps:

  1. Register on the eCitizen portal – Go to eCitizen and create an account.
  2. Select “Department of Immigration Services” – Click on Visa Application.
  3. Choose Visa Type – Read instructions carefully and select your visa category.
  4. Fill in the Application Form – Provide accurate personal details and upload required documents.
  5. Pay the Visa Fee – Payments can be made via Visa card, Mastercard, or other debit cards.
  6. Wait for Approval – Processing takes approximately 2 to 3 business days, but may vary.
  7. Download and Print the eVisa – Once approved, log in to your eCitizen account, download and print your eVisa.
  8. Present eVisa at the Port of Entry – Show the printed eVisa to immigration officers upon arrival in Kenya.

  • Visa fees are non-refundable.
  • Incomplete applications will be rejected.
  • Holding an eVisa does not guarantee entry—immigration officers have final discretion.
  • Business or employment in Kenya requires an additional permit or pass.
  • Each adult must apply for their visa through their personal eCitizen account.
